Where to find Filipinos in New Mexico


Albuquerque
 
       If you go to church in Albuquerque, most Filipinos go to Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel Ave. NE (near Tramway) where you'll sometimes see Filipino Deacon Leandro Centenera assisting in the Mass.  Sometimes the service is capped by Filipino potluck shared with the parishioners.  In May (usually second or third Saturday), you can watch the Santacruzan at the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church in Old Town Plaza.  (See Schedule of Events).  Two general contact points in Albuquerque:  Emilie 255-2060 or Tessie 214-5150.

Santa Fe
Many Filipino Americans in Santa Fe attend activities in Albuquerque.  Oral History Lecture Series is usually held once in Santa Fe in April.  (Check Schedule of Events).  Check out the businesses owned by Filipino Americans:

Espanola and Abiquiu (Monastery)
Filipinos Americans in Espanola and Abiquiu usually attend Santa Fe activities and sometimes drive to Albuquerque for major events.  Filipinos in these areas usually work as nurses and teachers who are with the Espanola Public School.  Abiquiu (which has a population of 350 people) does not have Filipino Americans but thirteen miles of dirt road from Abiquiu main road is the Monastery of Christ in the Desert where five Filipino monks live.  Most of them came from San Beda College in Manila.  A reality show last year called The Monastery was taped in this monastery. The monastery is a great place for a retreat.  Visit their website: www.christdesert.org.

Gallup
The first stop for Filipinos in Gallup is the Philippine Cuisine Express owned by Venus and Vince Maldonado located at 1910 East Aztec, Gallup, NM 87301, Tel. 505-722-3919.  The Filipinos are mostly nurses.  The community does not have a formal organization but has a cultural dance group.


Farmington

Las Cruces
There are roughly 80 to 100 Filipinos in Las Cruces who are also visited by Filipinos from White Sands and Holloman AFB and neighbor El Paso, TX.  They participate at the annual marathon held by the Bataan Veterans.  There is no formal organization or cultural group.  They get together during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthday parties.  The only point of contact is the Joy Luck Chinese Restaurant, owned by a Filipina, Rachel (Didn't get the last name), 3530 Foothills Rd #M, Las Cruces, NM, Tel. 505-532-0157.
