FANHS
The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) is a non-profit national organization with the mission to promote understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation, and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the US.
There are 28 chapters all over the US with headquarters in Seattle, WA. Every two years, the members attend the FANHS National conference where they meet and/or present papers or workshops or participate in plenary sessions. Some of the past venues of conferences were in Los Angeles, CA; St. Louis, MO; Honolulu, HI; Anchorage, AL; and Seattle, WA. Attendance ranges from 300 to 400 participants (including non-members who participate).
The conference usually lasts 3 days (from Thursday to Saturday, ending with a gala night). The participants from out-of-state may come early to participate in a tour (usually Wed). The conference is held in summer (between June to July).
Daytime activities (Thurs-Sat):
•Lectures, plenary sessions & workshops are presented by participants. Among a few topics in the past were: Ethnic Identity, Valuing Indigenous Culture, Writing Memoirs, Long March to Recognize WWII Filipino Veterans, Growing Up Filipino, Pinoy Educational Partnerships (by Fil-Am young adults), & War Brides. Anybody interested in presenting has to submit a call for paper & abstract before Feb.
Late afternoon (Thurs): Authors’ Night Authors talk about, sell & sign their books. Those interested has to inform the Committee.
