Puppetnettes: Philippines
(book/DVD) A collection of folktales in the Philippines in puppet play format. The DVD will show the plays and instructions on how the puppets were made. Plays have translations in Tagalog or Visayan (narration & dialogue). There are groups of Fil-Ams in Gallup, Farmington, Las Cruces, and other areas (Visit Where to find Filipinos in NM). Fil-Am Performing Groups Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque and Filipino American Cultural Dancers Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque ![]() The KEA at the Fil-Am Annual Christmas Party in 2006 Most of the members of the Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque (KEA) took a Kulintang Workshop from Danongan Kalanduyan in June 2004 through a grant from the City of Albuquerque, Capital Implementation Program, Urban Enhancement Trust Fund. Mr. Kalanduyan is the leading Kulintang Master in the US. Visit www.kulintang.com. Kulintang is an ensemble of instruments: kulintang which has 8 graduated sized gongs, agung, babandir, and dabakan (drums) and gandingan composed of 4 hanging gongs. The music is from the Southern Philippines. KEA makes it a point that members not only learn the instruments but also dance. They usually rehearse Sunday afternoons. For instruments, contact: www.reflectionsofasia.com Cultural Dancers ![]() Cultural Dancers at the Albuquerque Tricentennial Celebration in 2005 at the Alb. Civic Plaza. The Cultural Dance Group has been performing for more than 20 years. Some of the young members are now children and grandchildren of the past dancers. There is a wide variety of folk dances from all regions such as Tinikling (bamboo dance) and Sayaw sa Bangko (Dancing on the bench). The lead choreographer is Ligaya White. Other choreographers are: Evelio Sabay and Cora Romillo. The rehearsal day is usually Friday, 6:00 pm, at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center (tentative).
