Oral History Projects (One-time projects) 

  • Oral History Workshop, Oct 6 and Nov 11, 2001, St. Bernadette Parish Hall, Alb.  The two-part workshop aimed to orient members on how to conduct an oral history research. Facilitators were Elizabeth Akiya Chestnut, a historian/anthropologist and Michael Gorospe, historian and second-generation Filipino and American Indian (Laguna Pueblo).  
  • Exhibits.  Stories of Filipino Americans are displayed in exhibit story boards.  (Exhibit curator:  Dr. Ted Jojola)
  • Brochure.  "The Philippines-New Mexico Connection and the Filipino Migration to New Mexico" was published in April 2005.  Authors:  Dr. Dely Alcantara & Tessie J. Ordona Greenfield.  For full copy, click brochure.
  • NOTE:  The above activities & publications were funded by the City of Albuquerque, Capital Implementation, Program, Urban Enhancement Trust Fund (UETF).

Oral History Lecture Series

FANHS RG sponsors lecture series two to three times a year (usually held in community centers or residences) to feature Filipino Americans to share their stories.  The following have been featured:
  • In 2003, Chito Zafra (one of the pioneers of Fil-Am association who introduced Santacruzan)
  • In 2004, Teem Suelto (financial adviser), Dr. Jose Sacramento Martinez (medical director), Nita Pascual (retired educator/administrator)
  • In 2005, Myrna Manuel Tsinnajinnie (educator/daughter of Filipino pioneers), Pat Teston (former naval officer), Pete and Aurora Noriega (husband & wife engineers)
  • In 2006, Sons of Sakadas:  (Michael Gorospe, David Galbiso & Nick Balido), Daphne de Leon (NM Archive Director), and Dr. Dely Alcantara (senior demographer/professor, founding pres. of FANHS RG)
  • 2007, Perli Cunanan (United Way SF & Con Alma Health Foundation Officer), Members of the Youth Filipino Professionals: Ted Grumblatt (architect), Nanette Hayek (physician), Mary Ann Orate (TV personality), and Rod Ventura (lawyer).
  • 2008, co-sponsored by the Albuquerque Historical Society and FANHS RG, topic: "Filipino Americans' Contribution to New Mexico" held at the Albuquerque Museum:  Speakers:  Dr. Dely Alcantara, Celia Tomlinson, & Emilie Underwood; Cris Underwood (adopted by a US Army Lt.).
  • 2009, Stan Agustin, former principal, son of Filipino migrant worker; Fras Sabay, former president of the Fil-Am Association of NM. 

Publications

  • FANHS RG Newsletter (2 issues/year) was published in 2000-2001 (Editor:  Evelio Sabay); 2001-2002 (Editors:  Tessie Greenfield/Aggie Dagucon)
  • Pinoy Roadrunner Newsletter:  A joint publication with the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico (FAFNM) was started in 2005.  It has three issues a year with three rotating editors.  This was discontinued in 2008.  Visit FAFNM
  • Pamana Souvenir Programs:  2000 (Editor:  Evelio Sabay); 2002 and 2005 (Editors: Tessie Greenfield/Aggie Dagucon) (2005 Pamana issue was incorporated in the NaFFAA souvenir program during the NaFFAA Regional Conference); 2007 (Editor:  Tessie Greenfield)

Other Projects in the Past:

  • Philippine Flag.  In 2002, the Philippine flag was flown with 25 other flags of contries related to Hispanic culture at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Alb.  (Joined with FAFNM.)
  • Tagalog Lessons were held in 2005 by volunteer Tom Clay Tomlinson.  (This was a dry-run.  We hope to offer a more structured curriculum in the future with the FAFNM.)
  • Website:  www.fanhsriogrande.org 2002 - 2005 (Webmaster:  Nick Siarza).  The new website: http://riograndefanhs.org (webmaster:  Evelio Sabay) 2009.

Joint Projects:

  • Bataan Memorial Annual Event.  Every first Saturday of April at the Bataan Park, Alb., FANHS RG, Filipino American Foundation of NM, and the Bataan-Corregidor Memorial Foundation pay tribute to 1800 New Mexicans who came to the Philippines during World War II.   The Bataan Memorial which consists of 12-granite columns bearing the names of the soldiers was inaugurated in 2002.
  • Visiting Historian.  "From Missions to Mainstream:  Franciscan Missionary Efforts in Nueva Caceres, Philippines, 1578 to 1768" was the topic of the lecture by Stephen Henry Totanes, PhD, Visiting Fullbright Senior Scholar and Associate Professor from Ateneo de Manila University.  The lecture was hosted by the UNM Southwest Center and History Dept. with FANHS RG on May 7, 2005 at UNM.
  • Oral History Meeting with the Albuquerque Historical Society, April 20, 2008, Albuquerque Museum.
  • Oral History Workshop by Premier New Mexico Historian, Carlos Vasquez on August 30, 2008, National Hispanic Cultural Center, attended by members of FANHS RG and Southwest Writers.
  • Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade Exhibits' opening on Nov. 8, 2008 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center attended by the Phil. Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon.  Thanks to Carlos Vasquez and Veronica Iglesias-Swanson.  Exhibit ran from Nov. 8, 2008 to August 30, 2009.

Networking

  • Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico (FAFNM).  FANHS RG works with FAFNM during events such as the Fiesta Filipino and Santacruzan.  Website:  www.fafnm.org.
  • Consular Outreach.  During the past two Pamana events (2007, 2009), the staff of the Philippine Consul General Office in Los Angeles has arranged to provide consular outreach in New Mexico:  renewal of Phil. passports, voting registration, and dual citizenship applications.   This way, the Filipinos do not have to spend money in flying to LA.
  • National Hispanic Cultural Centerwith FANHS RG and FAFNM will be working on the Manila Galleon trade exhibit and the upcoming 2012 centennial celebration of NM statehood.  FANHS RG also co-sponsored the opening of the Manila Galleon Exhibit in November, 2008.  
  • Bataan-Memorial Corregidor Foundation of NM (BMCFofNM).  Cris Underwood is representing the Filipino community to BMCFofNM.  It's annual event is the commemoration of the Bataan Memorial every first Sat. of April at the Bataan Park (Carlisle & Lomas), Alb. Visit: bmcfofnm.org.
  • Southwest Oral History Association (SOHA).  Whenever possible, FANHS RG is represented at the SOHA regional conferences attended by American members from NM, Arizona, Nevada, Southern California,  Contact person in NM is author, Nancy Bartlit (nbartlit@aol.com). 
  • Albuquerque Historical Society which co-sponsored a lecture in April 2008 at the Albuquerque Museum. 
  • Asian American Association of NM.   The Filipino community is a member country of AAANM.  We join Asian Festival (usually in May during the Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month), Anti-tobacco Projects and Anti-tobacco Disparity Group (with Stop Tobacco on My People NM, Inc.), Asian Family Life Center and other projects such as the.  Visit: www.aaanm.us.
  • UNM (University of New Mexico).  FANHS RG has co-sponsored a lecture series with the Southwest Center and History Dept. (see Visiting Historian under Joint Projects).  UNM has provided for the venue (Zimmerman Library) during the 2003 FANHS National Trustees' Meeting.  We were assisted by the Southwest Research Center (Library) when we did our Phil-NM brochure.

FANHS National headquarters is located in Seattle, Washington.   Every two years, members of these chapters attend a national conference.  In 2006, it was held in Honolulu, Hawaii to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Coming of Filipinos to the US, honoring the Sakadas (plantation workers) who were the first wave of immigrants to work in the Hawaiian plantations.  In 2008, the conference was held in Anchorage, Alaska.  Seattle, our headquarters, will be the site of the conference in 2010. (www.fanhs-national.org).  

FANHS RG will host in 2012, in conjunction with the centennial celebration of New Mexico statehood.

FANHS National Level

  • FANHS Rio Grande hosted the 2003 FANHS Trustees Meeting in Albuquerque held at the UNM Library with Emilie Underwood as Coordinator.
  • Dr. Ted Jojola was the keynote speaker of the 2004 FANHS conference in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • Kristelle Siarza, FANHS RG member (a high school student at that time) was the layout editor Generations, Newsletter of FANHS National (2002-2004).
  • FANHS RG members have participated and presented papers in the national conferences:  Emilie & Cris Underwood, Dr. Dely Alcantara, Dr. Ted Jojola, Kristelle Siarza, Pat Teston, Evelio Sabay, Daphne de Leon, David Galbiso, and Tessie Greenfield.
