call 505-214-5150 Pinoys in New Mexico: There are around 5,000 Filipino Americans (with one race or a combination of other races) in New Mexico in the last Census (Year 2000). Most of them (around 2,000) live in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and surrounding areas. The Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico (FAFNM) has a membership of around 500 Filipino Americans (including children) from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe and other surrounding areas. FAFNM has two performing groups: Cultural Dancers and the Kulintang Ensemble of Alb. (Visit Performers). During Christmas, FAFNM has a caroling group to raise funds for its Outreach program. It has a scholarship fund for Fil-Am youth in college. (Visit http://filamfoundation.nm.googlepages.com). Another association (whose members are also with FAFNM) is the Filipino American National Historical Society Rio Grande. This website is an ad-hoc website of FANHS RG. NEXT DAY: DON'T MISS THEFESTIVAL OF ASIAN CULTURES Betsy and Jim Custodio (photo) will be the one of the recipients of a Presidential Award by the Asian American Assn. of New Mexico (AAANM) for their community service to the Filipino community for several years in spearheading Pista sa Nayon, caroling and other projects to raise funds for the Youth Scholarship and Outreach program. The award will be given at the Festival of Asian Cultures on May 18, Sunday at the Civic Plaza (Albuquerque). The ceremony will start at 10:30 am to be followed by performances from Asian cultural groups through 4:00 pm. Other awardees are: Anita Lee Gallegos (Japanese), Blachandra Kulkarmi (Indian), Nguyen Thi Nu (Vietnamese), and Von Pratt (Korean). Guest speaker will be Mayor Martin Chavez. The annual event is presented by the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund and the Asian American Assn. of New Mexico and co-sponsored by the City of Albuquerque and Ta-Lin International Market. hosted a lecture forum on "The Filipino Americans' Contribution to New
Mexico" on April 20, Sunday, at the Albuquerque Museum. This was
co-sponsored by the Filipino American National Historical Society Rio
Grande Chapter (FANHS RG). The speakers (from left) were: Dr. Dely Alcantara who talked about Philippine History, the Philippine-New Mexico Connection, and Migration of Filipinos to New Mexico; Celia Tomlinson, female engineer in NM (who happens to be a Filipina) talked about her book, Don't Tell Me You Can't.
Both Dely and Celia were recipients of the Governor's Award for
Outstanding Women in New Mexico (2004, 1999 respectively). Emilie Underwood,
president of FANHS RG, talked about the Filipino community and the
Pamana Awards given to Filipino Americans who have contributed to NM.
The Kulintang Ensemble of Albuquerque
presented a brief number and invited participants to dance.
Approximately 40 people attended the event. We want to
thank the Albuquerque Historical Society for giving us a chance to
share our Philippine-New Mexico history and heritage.![]() The Fil-Am Cultural Dance Group has been busy performing in different social events for the Asian Pacific celebrations in 2008: April 13 at the Thai Temple, Wat Buddhamongkolnimit, celebrating the Thai/Cambodian/Lao New Year, April 19 - Asian Youth Adult Festival, May 15, Asian Family Center (see below - Dr. Mazumbar's play), VSA Bldg., May 17 - Fiesta Filipino and Santacruzan, May 18 - Asian Festival in Civic Plaza, and May 31 - Celebration of Japanese Arts. The group has performed in major cultural events around the city. They have also performed in senior centers, community centers and schools. Artistic director is Ligaya White. Maida Malby is the new secretary of the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico. Maida has been active in both Filipino and Asian communities. She is also the treasurer of the Asian American Association of New Mexico. Our CONDOLENCES to Kalvin and Sofie Nutt for losing their father/father-in-law, Lee Nutt, 72, on April 19 in Clovis, NM.
